Celebrations are being held throughout the year to mark 1000 years of the island’s parliament or Tynwald, founded by the Vikings, and now, it is claimed, the oldest assembly in the world with unbroken traditions. The celebrations will include a Scottish Week in which a complete programme of Scottish events will take place between 15th and 21st July. These will include the Jim MacLeod Band Show (17th July), Scottish Ceilidh (19th July), MacLeod Ball (20th July) and Highland Gathering and Atholl Ball (21st July).
The purpose of the Scottish Week is to mark the close historical connection between the island and Scotland. Somerled, the progenitor of Clan Donald was King of the Hebrides and Man in the 12th Century and therefore our Clan has a unique place in the annals of the island. It is with much pleasure that we announce that the High Chief and Lady Macdonald have been invited to attend the Highland Games at Douglas on the 21st and welcome the support of clansfolk at that event. All Scots who attend the Millennium will be made particularly welcome by our Manx kinsfolk.
