The High Chief, Lord Macdonald of Macdonald and Lady Macdonald attended the Highland Games in Douglas, capital of the Isle of Man, on Saturday 21st July 1979, as guests of the Duke of Atholl, Chieftain of the Games, as part of the Scottish Week during the Manx Parliament Millennium celebrations.
At the ceremony the High Chief’s “escort” consisted of Mr Ronald Kelly of Northwood, Middlesex (a native Manxman), his wife Pauline, and their sons Jeffrey (a student at Dundee) and Nicholas (at boarding school on the island), and Norman H. MacDonald (who acted as Bannerman to the Chief), all members of the Clan Donald Society of Edinburgh. The highlight of the Atholl Ball in the evening was a fine performance by the pipes and drums of the Atholl Highlanders, the Duke’s private army who were flown from Scotland specially for the occasion. Among those who attended the ball were Doctors Ronald and Alison McDonald of Ramsey, who have since become members of the Clan Donald Society of Edinburgh.
